The role of a Personal Tutor is a distinct one within the Glasgow School of Art. Personal Tutors provide guidance to students on matters relating to their learning experience and when appropriate signpost students to professional services.

After a successful pilot scheme, the Personal Tutor Scheme has been implemented across all Schools, allocating all undergraduate students to a named member of staff and following the Personal Tutor structure as outlined in this module. In some departments there are existing roles which take on these responsibilities such as Contact Tutors, Year/Stage Leaders, Course Leads or Programme Leaders.

The information provided in this online module is therefore designed to help you make the distinction between academic tutoring and personal tutoring, as well as providing you with guidance as how best to engage a student in a personal tutoring conversation. The proposed structure for the Personal Tutor Scheme is also provided as a point of reference for people considering how to best develop personal tutoring interactions.

Online Personal Tutoring

Following GSA’s return to predominantly campus-based delivery of learning and teaching, with some online and hybrid working, we have continued to provide information about how personal tutoring can be undertaken online. Much of the guidance relates to both face to face as well as online personal tutoring with some specific considerations for online here.

Training and Support
