The role of a Personal Tutor is that of a tutor, as such will encompass those areas of the student experience that relate to and impact on learning. There is no expectation that Personal Tutors will have skills beyond those of an effective tutor. Students will however present a range of issues and concerns related to their academic and personal experience.

The table below gives examples of areas of support a Personal Tutor may be involved in as well as examples of where a Personal Tutor would not have responsibility, but would be expected to support a student to engage with their programme team or appropriate professional services.

Personal Tutors will:

Welcome students and support them in managing transitional points within their studies.
Meet with students, in line with agreed activities (i.e. notionally once per semester).
Respond promptly (normally within three to five working days) to a request for contact.
Guide and support students in their academic and personal development.
Support students to engage with their learning, and reflect upon feedback to support future learning and development.
Clarify GSA policy and procedures.
Support professional practice and reflection on the skills and attributes that underpin professional development.
Signpost students to further sources of support and guidance at GSA as and when appropriate.
Follow up where appropriate with students to support help seeking.
Liaising appropriately with Programme leaders and support services.

Personal Tutors will not be responsible for:

Providing subject-specific guidance or advice on student’s programme or courses.
Giving advice on curriculum choices or approving changes to a student’s studies i.e. Leave of Absence, Mitigation, Extensions etc.
Providing feedback on student’s assessments.
Befriending students.
Providing advice on personal, health or domestic issues.
Counselling the student.
Providing financial advice or guidance.

As a Personal Tutor your role is likely to involve supporting a student to engage with their programme team or appropriate professional service on these kinds of issues when they arise.
