Once you are familiar with the basic functions of the New Gradebook, then please review the features below which may enhance your experience of the New Gradebook.

1. Download all student submissions

As with the old gradebook, for any given assignment you can download a zip file containing all student submissions, allowing you to view them outside of Canvas.

2. Filter the gradebook

You can filter the New Gradebook – most usefully, to show only students in the section or group of your choosing (if you have already put students into sections or groups).

3. Show or hide unpublished assignments

In the New Gradebook, you can choose to show or hide assignments which you have created, but not yet published.

4. Quickly give all students the same grade

If you want to enter the same grade for all students in any given assignment, you can do this in one go. For example, this could be useful if you wanted to quickly mark all student submissions as 'complete' (see the second 'Important Change' to the gradebook for 19/20).

5. Arrange columns

You can arrange columns in the New Gradebook – most usefully, alphabetically (by assignment name) or chronologically (by assignment due date). You can also click and drag columns to arrange them manually, and you can adjust the width of columns.

6. Sort assignment columns

You can sort an individual assignment column by grade (high to low, or low to high), or by status (missing or late).

7. Add Notes

You can create a ‘Notes’ column in the New Gradebook, to add brief additional information pertaining to students. Notes are for staff reference; they are not visible to students. (They differ from 'Comments', which can be made on student submissions, and which can be made visible to students.)

8. Choose how to sort and display student names

You can display student names in ascending or descending alphabetical order, by either first or last name.

You can also choose to view 'Secondary Info' underneath student names. The more useful items of secondary info are likely to be: SIS ID (the student’s eight-digit GSA ID/matric number); Login ID (their GSA student username, eg a.smith1); or their Section or Group (if you have students organised in sections or groups in the course).

9. Use colours and icons

10. View history

You can view the gradebook history to see a read-only log of all changes made in the gradebook within the last year - including when, how and by whom submissions have been graded.
